macOS dictation · free & open source

Hold a key.
Speak. It types.

speakeasy. lives in your menu bar and waits. Press ⌥ Right Option, say what you mean, let go — clean text lands at your cursor, in whatever app you're already in. No window to switch to. No transcript to copy. It just appears.

01 The whole interaction

  1. i.

    Hold

Press and hold Right Option from anywhere. A small pill fades in. Nothing steals your focus.

  2. ii.

    Speak

Say the sentence the way you'd say it out loud — false starts, "um"s and all.

  3. iii.

    Release

Let go. speakeasy. transcribes with Groq Whisper and quietly tidies the filler.

  4. iv.

    It's there

The finished text pastes itself at your cursor. You never left the app you were in.

02 Why it feels different

Polish, not just transcription

Raw speech is messy. speakeasy. runs an optional cleanup pass that drops the "uh"s, resolves your self-corrections, and fixes punctuation — without changing what you meant. Dial it from minimal to strong.

Lives in the menu bar

No dock icon, no window management. It's there when you hold the key and gone when you don't.

Works in every app

Because it pastes at your cursor, it works in email, your editor, Slack, the terminal — anywhere you can type.

Fast by design

Groq's inference is quick enough that release-to-text feels close to instant for everyday sentences.

Your voice doesn't loiter

Audio is captured locally and sent straight to transcription — there's no account history of what you said. In the open-source edition you bring your own Groq key, so the audio path is entirely yours.

03 Same app. Two ways to run it.
